Perennial herb with stems less than 1m tall. Leaves pinnate, with bristles flattened to the wrinkled surface. Flowers with sepals white or pink. Fruit a capsule, small and hard.

R. aesculifolia Batalin from N China is also summer-flowering and occasionally offered; it has palmate leaves.
