Mitra — cap, referring to the bishop’s mitre-like shape of the young fruit pod.
Low herbaceous perennials. Leaves mostly basal, simple and lobed, cordate at the base; stalks long. Flower clusters with the numerous, small flowers arranged on one side of the stem. Sepals 5. Petals 5, deeply divided, green or white. Stamens 5 or 10, either alternating with or opposite the petals. Carpels 2, with a single chamber. Fruit a capsule containing numerous seeds.
Used as groundcover plants for shady areas with moist, rich soils.
About 20 species from E Asia and N America.
