Plants to 1m tall. Leaves at the base, roundish, to about 15 cm long,with 5-9 toothed lobes. Flower cluster to 30 cm or so long. Flowers to 5 mm long, green with red colouring; summer.

H. rubescens Torr. from W USA has smaller leaves to 5 cm wide with 3-7 lobes and flowers that are pink or pink-tinged.
