Rosettes mostly 2-10 cm wide, open. Leaves mostly 50-60, 3-8 cm long, hairless, green, often with purplish apices, sharply pointed. Flower clusters flat-topped, on hairy stems to about 30 cm long. Flowers mostly 12-16-parted, whitish or purplish with red lines giving a purplish effect; summer.
A common and extremely variable species with many hybrids and garden forms.
