Deciduous trees. Leaves alternate, simple. Flowers in axillary clusters. Sepals and petals 5. Stamens 10. Ovary semi-inferior. Fruit woody, not splitting when mature.
Occasionally available as R. macrocarpum Hu which has leaves that are glossy above and with star-shaped hairs below; the margins are finely toothed. New shoots reddish. Leaves colouring in autumn. Flowers white in hanging clusters that appear before the leaves. Fruit 7-8 cm long with 8-10 ribs.
