Shrub to about 3 m tall. Leaves mostly 2-3(-7) cm long, deeply 3-5 lobed, the main lobes further lobed. Leaf stalks mostly 1-3 cm long. Flowers solitary. Stalks mostly longer than the leaf blades. Sepals 5, narrow, deeply cut, 3-5 veined. Petals violet-purple about 5-7 cm long, with a single tooth; mostly spring. Capsule ovoid, shorter than the sepals, about 2 cm wide.
