Gordonia axillaris (Ker Gawl.) D.Dietr.

Large shrub to small tree. Leaves to 15 cm long, elliptic to oblong or oblanceolate, leathery dark glossy green with a few teeth in the upper half, tapering to the base. Flowers to about 8 cm wide or so on very short stalks, white. Petals 5-6. Stamens numerous, yellow; mostly winter. Fruit to about 3 cm long, hard and woody, with woody, persistent sepals.
