Franklinia Marsh.

Commemorating United States President Benjamin Franklin (1706–90).

Deciduous shrub or small tree with foliage in clusters at the tips of the branches. Leaves alternate, simple, oblanceolate to obovate with fine teeth at the tip, scarlet in autumn. Flowers bisexual, axillary, simple, more or less stalkless, white. Sepal and petals 5, stamens numerous, free, anthers attached to filament at the centre. Ovary roundish with 5 chambers. Fruit a woody capsule splitting from the top and bottom alternately, each chamber with 6-8 wingless seeds.

Known through the only species F. alatamaha Marsh., Franklin's Tree.

Deciduous tree or shrub with more or less stalkless flowers; seeds angled but not winged.

1 species from N America now known only in cultivation.
