Camellia sasanqua Thunb.

Shrub. Leaves 3-6 cm long, mostly oblong and about twice as long as broad. Branchlets hairless. Flowers white (except cultivars), petals 1-2.5 cm long, hairy. Styles 3, deeply split.

Specimens grown at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (Melbourne Gardens) under this name have serrated (not near-entire) leaves as indicated by botanical descriptions.

Japan

Branchlets hairless; leaves with veins hardly visible below. Like C. sasanqua but leaves thicker, petals and styles shorter.

Flowers semi-double, pink to silvery pink, up to 11 cm wide. Obtained by Bert Jones as a seedling from Camellia Grove Nursery, St Ives, NSW, Australia in 1958, parentage unknown. Int. c. 1967.

Flowers deep red, 9–10 cm wide. Raised by Tom Dodd Jr of Semmes, Alabama, USA, as a chance seedling of 'Crimson Tide' that first bloomed in 1959. Int. c. 1962.

Flowers about 7.5 cm wide, pale pink, informal double with curled petals. A chance seedling raised Dr A.L. Ducker, Lindfield, New South Wales, Australia and first bloomed 1959. Int. c. 1963.
