Black Beech

Tall, evergreen tree. Bark rough and dark. New growth densely hairy. Leaves mostly 1-1.5 cm long, leathery, wedge shaped at the base, elliptic-oblong, mostly rounded at the tip, grey-hairy below; vein pairs mostly 4-6. Leaf stalks 1-2 mm long. Nuts to 7 mm long.

New Zealand

Grows naturally on both islands in lowland to montane forest.

VIC: Dandenongs ('Pirianda' about 13 m tall in 1984).
