Nothofagus moorei (F.Muell.) Krasser

Antarctic Beech

Tree to 50 m tall in nature, much smaller in cultivation. Leaves in 2 ranks, more or less ovate, 3-10 cm long, leathery. Leaf stalk 3-5 mm long. Flowers small in spring. Fruit 8-10 mm long with bristly protrusions and opening by 4 valves.

Grows naturally in cool temperate rainforest to altitude c. 1550 m in SE Qld and C NSW.

NSW: Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah. VIC: Mt Macedon ('Duneira' and possibly elsewhere on the mount); Woodend (cemetery 14.5 m tall in 1994 with circumference of 3.2 m at 70 cm).
