Latinised form of the Japanese name akebi.
Deciduous or evergreen climbers. Leaves with 3-5 leaflets. Flowers unisexual with both sexes in the same cluster, the male flowers are smaller and more numerous at the tip of the flower cluster. Sepals 3(4). Petals absent. Male flowers with 6-8 free stamens. Female flowers with 5-10 carpels. Fruit a fleshy follicle.
