Clematis viticella L.

Deciduous semi-woody climber. Stems reddish. Leaves pinnate. Leaflets ovate to lanceolate, lobed or divided. Flowers solitary, terminal or axillary, nodding; summer to autumn. Perianth segments 4, spreading, to 4 cm long, blue, purple, red or white. Styles eventually hairless in flower, eventually shortly feathery.

Mediterranean, W Asia

C. campaniflora Brotero from Portugal is similar but has green stems and bell-shaped flowers with vilet segments and styles that are hairy in flower.

C. הtriternata DC. (C. flammula × C. viticella) is a garden hybrid climber with simple or bipinnate leaves and entire leaflets. Flowers in branching terminal clusters. Perianth segments 6, lilac.
