Clematis montana D C.

Woody climber. Leaves of 3 leaflets with large teeth, more or less ovate, 3-lobed at the tip. Flowers white or pink, in the axils of the previous year's growth at same time as leaves appear, almond scented; spring to summer. Perianth segments 4-5 hairy on the veins on the outer face. Feathery persistent styles about1-1.5cm long.

C. spooneri Rehder & E.H. Wilson which is hairy on all parts is occasionally grown and is sometimes treated as a synonym of C. montana var. sericea Franch.

f. grandiflora (Hook.) Rehder has flowers large, white, prolific. Chinese naturally-occurring form.

var. rubens Kunze from China has purplish young leaves and pinkish red flowers.

Tetraploid cultivar with red stems and bronze leaves. Flowers large, pinkish mauve.
