Greek pseudo - false, larix - larch.
Tall trees. Leaves linear, pointed, spirally arranged and widely separated on the main shoots, whorled on club-shaped lateral spurs. Male and female cones on the same tree. Male cones in terminal clusters on short lateral spurs. Female cones more or less ovoid, shed and breaking up at maturity.
Although superficially similar to Larix, it is not related to it, being closer to Keteleeria in cone and seed morphology.

Differs from Larix in having lattened leaves mostly more than 3.5 cm long; constrictions of annual rings on longer, club-shaped leaf spurs surrounded by pointed persistent scales; female cones in clusters, breaking up when mature.
