Rhizomes to 5 mm thick, covered with silvery-white scales. Blade to 20 cm long, divided 3 times, triangular in outline, leathery, purplish when young; stalk purplish. Indusia semicircular, sunken and giving a blistered appearance to the upper surface of the frond.

Needs shelter and warmth.

Humata griffithiana (Hook.) C. Chr. (Davallia griffithiana Hook.), from India, China and Taiwan, is very similar and has been confused with this species but it has indusia attached for only a short distance along their sides.
