Pherosphaera fitzgeraldii

A low, densely branched shrub to 2 m tall with slender drooping branchlets. Leaves scale-like, 2.5-3.5 mm long, ridged, tips incurved, the inner surface white and the base extending down the stem. Male and female cones small, solitary, terminal. Male cones purplish, to 6 mm long. Female cones 3-5 mm long, woody. Grows naturally in the spray zone at the base of waterfalls or in moist caves in the Katoomba to Wentworth Falls area of the Blue Mts where it is a threatened species in the wild. Rarely grown ornamentally but occasionally offered in the nursery trade as a botanical novelty.
